‘REC(2) 5K BUZZ CHALLENGE’

REC2 will be released in a few New Zealand theatres on Black Friday (13 Nov), and Ant Timpson (Filmhead) is helping the distributor – Vendetta Films – to get the word out. The catch? They only have a few thousand to market it. So Ant pitched Vendetta to let him give away 75% (Five Thousand Dollars Cash) to any individual(s) who promote (Buzz) the movie REC2 in the boldest and most innovative fashion. They said yes. - MY REC 2 POSTER DESIGN -

Below is my first Rec2 Buzz installment, a poster concept for the upcoming film. I didn’t want the poster to have blood or a zombie(s), sure these 2 elements have a lot to do with the film, but I wanted to think outside the square, as I thought this is what the judges would be no doubt looking for.

- MY DESIGN CONCEPT -

The poster is very clean and to the point. The main focus of the poster is of course on the HK MP5, probably one of the worlds most used and recognized weapons in SWAT. Creative attention is drawn to the normal banana magazine being formed in the shape of a number 2. There are also some other small details such as: The fire control switch on the gun being set on ‘REC’ and also the common red dot symbol used in the ‘REC2′ logo being substituted for a 9mm bullet butt with the text ‘NOVEMBER 13 / 2009MM’

Alternatively you can watch the trailer HERE >> REC(2) and share it on either your Facebook or Twitter accounts by following the ’share this video’ link under the trailer rating. NEWS: SORRY JACK, CHUCKY’S BACK, AGAIN!

Yep, you guessed it, yet another cult remake. Original writer of the 1988 horror classic Don Mancini is back for a second pass at the original film, with not only again writing the new script, but filling the shoes of original Director Tom Holland to have a crack at directing it. Now when I heard this one it was not unlike hearing about the ‘A Nightmare on Elm St’ remake, “WTF? Why the hell can’t they just leave things alone.” I think any dedicated horror fans initial reaction.

Then when I heard it was being re-written and directed by the original ‘Child’s Play’ writer Don Mancini, I felt a slight sense of relief. After doing a little research I found out that Don wants to return to the real roots of Chucky, a scary character, and not some stupid half assed comedy doll that we were subject to in ‘Bride of Chucky’ and ‘Seed of Chucky’, 2 all time major fails in my opinion.

Sure the original 3 films saw some ‘humorous’ calls from the lake shore strangler, especially the 3rd film, with some of the most memorable quotes such as ‘Don’t fuck with the Chuck!’ and ‘Presto! Ya DEAD!’ But the latest films have been nothing but rubbish, and have in no way captured the spirit of Child’s Play.

Producer for the Child’s Play films David Kirschner had the following to say about the upcoming 2010 remake:

“We’re discussing it with Don Mancini, who has written all of them with us from the beginning. The next one we’re going to do is we’re going back and remaking the first film, and pushing it even further and making a very terrifying version of the original, which is pretty scary as it is.”Source: Shocktillyoudrop.com

I guess we will have to stay tuned to see wether Chucky will be CGI, or if Brad Dourif will return (rumoured) for another crack at the landmark voice he delivered to the horror industry over 20 years ago. All in all, I am keeping an open mind on this one, and hope they use all the experience that they have gained over the last 20 years to really blow us away as an audience.

NEWS: RETURN TO ELM ST

Well, where do we start. I think all us dedicated horror fans are sceptical of horror remakes at the best of times, not alone when it’s a remake of one of the greatest horror characters of all time, and in my eyes, one of the most creative horror concepts of all time. When I first heard this I was enraged to say the least, and once some general forum surfing was done, found I was far from the only one that had these thoughts.

I suppose the main concern here is that there is ‘No’ if not ‘Little’ room for error, as this isn’t some remake of ‘When A Stranger Calls’, this is a remake of one of the most memorable, hands down, cult horror classics to ever grace our screens. To fail on a ‘A Nightmare on Elm St’ remake would not only 1. Damage the overall film series to how it currently sits in the industry, but break an unbelievable amount of horror fans hearts, in more ways than Hollywood may even care to imagine.

Not unlike the ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ remake that we have seen in recent years, it is sacred ground, a milestone, a series that stands out from the crowd of thousands of horror films that have been produced. Hell, the average person on the street, not even being any sort of horror fan, would probably be able to tell you that they had heard of either, and answer ‘That’s a horror movie or something isn’t it?’

Fact of the matter is, it is going to happen, and is already well in production. So wether we like it or not, we just have to accept it, and hope we are delivered something that will not feel like a blunt force stab to the chest.

A Nightmare on Elm St shall once again return to the big screen in 2010, with the release date (USA) set for 30/04/10. The new instalment will be directed by Samuel Bayer, with the notorious teen slayer ‘Freddy’ to be played by none other than Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, The Little Children). I personally believe that they made a fantastic decision on Jackie, as I think the guy looks creepy as hell, and could only start to imagine what he would amount to in full cinema make-up. However, there were various talks of Billy Bob Thornton being interested in the role, but due to certain circumstances (which I am most happy about), will not be playing the part.

Nancy will be played by actress Rooney Mara, which for the most part, I am also happy about, due to the fact that she isn’t some well known Hollywood sex symbol.

As when there was speculation of Lindsay Lohan to maybe fill Nancy’s boots, I almost fell over and died. Could you imagine? Lindsey, being chased down by Billy Bob in full Freddy attire? My blood boils just thinking about it.

It will be quite interesting to see if it follows closely to the original storyline, or wether it goes out on a limb, and takes its own direction. Either way, Fingers crossed that if they do decide to take their own approach to the original storyline, it delivers. As if it turns out to be a major disaster, some fans may just want to see Samuel Bayer delivered early to a grassy nowell inside a black pine box.
