NEWS: RETURN TO ELM ST

Well, where do we start. I think all us dedicated horror fans are sceptical of horror remakes at the best of times, not alone when it’s a remake of one of the greatest horror characters of all time, and in my eyes, one of the most creative horror concepts of all time. When I first heard this I was enraged to say the least, and once some general forum surfing was done, found I was far from the only one that had these thoughts.
I suppose the main concern here is that there is ‘No’ if not ‘Little’ room for error, as this isn’t some remake of ‘When A Stranger Calls’, this is a remake of one of the most memorable, hands down, cult horror classics to ever grace our screens. To fail on a ‘A Nightmare on Elm St’ remake would not only 1. Damage the overall film series to how it currently sits in the industry, but break an unbelievable amount of horror fans hearts, in more ways than Hollywood may even care to imagine.
Not unlike the ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ remake that we have seen in recent years, it is sacred ground, a milestone, a series that stands out from the crowd of thousands of horror films that have been produced. Hell, the average person on the street, not even being any sort of horror fan, would probably be able to tell you that they had heard of either, and answer ‘That’s a horror movie or something isn’t it?’

Fact of the matter is, it is going to happen, and is already well in production. So wether we like it or not, we just have to accept it, and hope we are delivered something that will not feel like a blunt force stab to the chest.
A Nightmare on Elm St shall once again return to the big screen in 2010, with the release date (USA) set for 30/04/10. The new instalment will be directed by Samuel Bayer, with the notorious teen slayer ‘Freddy’ to be played by none other than Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, The Little Children). I personally believe that they made a fantastic decision on Jackie, as I think the guy looks creepy as hell, and could only start to imagine what he would amount to in full cinema make-up. However, there were various talks of Billy Bob Thornton being interested in the role, but due to certain circumstances (which I am most happy about), will not be playing the part.
Nancy will be played by actress Rooney Mara, which for the most part, I am also happy about, due to the fact that she isn’t some well known Hollywood sex symbol.
As when there was speculation of Lindsay Lohan to maybe fill Nancy’s boots, I almost fell over and died. Could you imagine? Lindsey, being chased down by Billy Bob in full Freddy attire? My blood boils just thinking about it.
It will be quite interesting to see if it follows closely to the original storyline, or wether it goes out on a limb, and takes its own direction. Either way, Fingers crossed that if they do decide to take their own approach to the original storyline, it delivers. As if it turns out to be a major disaster, some fans may just want to see Samuel Bayer delivered early to a grassy nowell inside a black pine box.

Look I have to be honest – I was disappointed to see that Hollywood is remaking soo many cult classics but I have been comforted in the fact that Jackie Earle Haley is cast as Freddy – Fanfuckintastic! Can’t wait!
